The TalkDog Comic Online resource is designed to support the development of effective speaking and listening skills for children aged 5–11 years. The resource consists of interactive activities, games and stimulus screens; all presented by the TalkDog cartoon character and friends.
The materials are compatible with interactive whiteboards so that you can use this resource with the whole class as well as with small groups. You will find that many of the modules act as a lively stimulus for whole-class discussion, or circle time.
As well as helping you to deliver speaking and listening objectives, the TalkDog Comic Online also supports your work in PSHE and Citizenship, making especially helpful links between communicating and emotional literacy. Download the curriculum guidance document for the full list of objectives.
An on-screen symbol,
or
, is
used to indicate when the Teacher's Notes accompanying this resource contain additional
information and suggestions for supplementary ways to use the activity in school. All the
activities could be used for the whole 5-11 age range.
The
symbol appears when an Activity Sheet linked to the unit is included in the Teacher's section.
The resource contains six modules, which together cover the essential features of effective speaking and listening. Each module is broken down further into smaller self-contained 'units.' These units contain a variety of different games and activities, introduced and explained by TalkDog and friends.
There are two sets of Teacher's Notes provided – one for use with 5–7 year olds and one for use with 7–11 year olds. The Teacher's Notes for 5–7 year olds provide information about the units that are most suitable for this age group. However, more able 5–7 year olds will be able to tackle more of the content and some of the 7–11s Activity Sheets may also be suitable.
Ideally, you will be able to work through the modules and units sequentially over half a term, as part of your literacy teaching. You can then revisit any of the activities again as the need – and interest – arises.
Alternatively, you can dip in and out of the modules in any order selecting topics with which you think the children need more practice, or which they will find especially enjoyable.
The TalkDog Comic Online is very flexible. The modules can be used independently of the Teacher's Notes – making it ideal for pupils to use individually – or it can be used as a starting point as a whole class interactive whiteboard resource.
